History/Overview

Creve Coeur, Missouri is located in west St. Louis County and shares a zip code with neighboring Town and Country. The city is home to the headquarters for Bayer and Drury Hotels. 

The city’s name is French for “heartbreak” and is said to have come from the nearby Creve Coeur Lake. In fact, the city’s website claims that the lake was formed around a broken heart, belonging to an Indian Princess whose love was not returned by a French trapper. It’s said that she jumped from the ledge that overlooked the lake. 

Native American history is rich in this area, with archaeological digs and written accounts showing them in the area beginning in 9500 BC and continuing until 1800 AD. The area was fished and farmed by French settlers beginning in the 18th century, and then fur trappers and traders moved in during the 19th century. 

Creve Coeur was acquired by the US through the Louisiana Purchase, and Lewis and Clark took their famous expedition right through the current-day city. Creve Coeur was incorporated as a city in 1949 and is still home to 2 cabins that are over 200 years old.

Creve Coeur is part of west St. Louis County and is located just 20 miles or about 15 minutes from downtown St. Louis. The city is bordered by Town and Country to the south, Maryland Heights to the north, Chesterfield to the west, and Clayton to the east.
