History/Overview

Today’s Chesterfield was incorporated in 1988, but humans have called this land home for thousands of years. In fact, it was once home to Native American tribes, and there is a site in the western portion of the city where carvings and artwork dating back 4,000 years were discovered. In another area of Chesterfield, a Mississippian site dating back about 1,000 years was located and historians determined that it served as a ceremonial and market center.

Nearly 50,000 people now call Chesterfield, MO home. It’s a wonderful city that’s home to many beautiful homes, top-rated schools, exceptional senior living facilities, cultural and historical attractions, and, of course, world-class shopping and dining.

This community benefited from great imagination, foresight, collaboration, and commitment from those who live and work in the city. Incorporated in 1988, this is a newer city that has a rich history. Yet still, it’s the perfect example of what happens when residents, businesses, and civic leaders work together toward a shared vision of creating an excellent community in which to work, live, and play.

Location

Chesterfield, Missouri is located in West County, St. Louis, Missouri. Located just 25-minutes from downtown, Chesterfield has a total area of 33.52 square miles, including both land and water.

Parts of this city lie in what is known as the Chesterfield Valley, or formerly Gumbo Flats, and is in the Missouri River floodplain.
