History/Overview

Bellefontaine Neighbors has been a settlement since the mid 1800s and served as a key region for agriculture during this time. It was incorporated as a fourth-class city in 1950 at which time it was home to only 766 people. During the late ‘50s and 1960s, Bellefontaine Neighbors saw exponential growth as it grew from a city of less than 1,000 people to over 13,000 by the end of the ‘60s.

Bellefontaine Neighbors is located just outside of St. Louis city limits, located about 20-minutes north of downtown.

Crime

It’s worth mentioning that Bellefontaine Neighbors is notorious for having a higher than normal crime rate. Over the past few years, Bellefontaine Neighbors has seen a spike in overall crime rates. In 2015, the city had the highest murder rate of any city in Missouri with a population of more than 10,000. The following year, Bellefontaine Neighbors doubled as the state murder capital with two murders. The city has since seen a sharp decline in murder rates, with 2017 seeing only one murder.
