History/Overview

The Gateway Arch is a 630-foot tall monument located in St. Louis, Missouri. It’s made from stainless steel and rests in the shape of a weighted catenary arch, this monument is known as the world’s tallest arch and the state’s tallest accessible building. In fact, some people even consider it the tallest man-made monument in the entire western hemisphere.

The St. Louis Arch was built to commemorate the American westward expansion, and was officially dedicated to “The American People,” it’s also commonly called “The Gateway to the West.” The Arch is situated in Gateway Arch National Park and is listed as a National Historic Landmark. It’s not only renowned as an international symbol of St. Louis, but it’s also a very popular travel destination.

The monument was designed by Eero Saarinen, a Finnish-American architect, and construction began in early 1963. The Gateway Arch was completed and opened to the public in mid-1967, at a total cost of $13 million at the time.

FAQs

What is the purpose of the Gateway Arch?

The St. Louis Arch was built to commemorate Thomas Jefferson and the Louisiana Purchase. St. Louis played a central role in the American westward expansion that followed the purchase.

Is the Gateway Arch worth it?

Absolutely! The Arch is much more than just a huge monument – it’s an experience like no other! Even if you opt to not take the tram to the top, the museum is very interesting, the grounds are gorgeous, and the Arch itself makes for a great photo backdrop.

Can you go inside the Gateway Arch?

Yes. The museum and grounds are free to visit, but the tram to the top requires a paid ticket. Each tram tour has an estimated duration of between 45 and 60 minutes. Unfortunately, it’s worth mentioning that the trams are small five-seat orbs, so this is not a good activity for larger people.
